The Château was first constructed in 1179 when this region was part of English Aquitaine ruled by the Plantaganets under Richard the Lionheart who was mortally wounded at nearby CHALUS. The chateau was at the centre of the Hundred Years War during the 14th Century and at the beginning of the 15th century was owned by the Bishop of Limoges who added the round towers and completed the construction of the castle under the form that we know today.
By the 16th century the estate had become a Barony and during the Religious Wars, in 1569, the castle was attacked by Protestants and a fire destroyed much of the original castle. The castle was sold at the end of the 16th century to Campniac family and during the Revolution, in 1789, it was attacked and pillaged then split up and sold by the State.
