Location
Saint-Nicolas Courbefy is situated in the area known as Le Pays des Fueillardiers - the country of the woodcutters. The name for this pretty area derives from the extensive chestnut woods interspersed with many small lakes, some of which have sandy beaches. The on going traditional forestry occupations such as stakes and hoop making, have supplied products for the Bordeaux wine region over the last century.
Saint-Nicolas Courbefy is 5km from Ladignac le Long and Bussière-Galant, both of which have some small shops. Châlus (12 km), and St Yrieix la Perche (15 km), the nearest towns, have a wide range of restaurants, shops and supermarkets. Limoges, the capital of The Limousin, has all the city-centre shops and out-of-town stores you would expect from a thriving city.
The area has richly wooded countryside, beautiful river valleys and lovely lakes. Lovers of architecture will appreciate the sober elegance of abbeys and monastery churches, not to mention numbers of Romanesque chapels, fortified churches, châteaux, rich country retreats and sturdy castles.
Nearby is the Route of Richard the Lionheart and at Châlus is the Chateau Châlus-Chabrol, where Richard was mortally wounded. Of course a stay at Petite Maison du Pré would not be complete without a visit to Limoges with its famous porcelain factory shops, museums, gothic arcades, half-timbered houses and bustling and colourful squares; or to Perigueux, famed for its historic cathedral, delightfully quaint shopping lanes and of course, foie gras.
Activities
The Périgord-Limousin National Park stretching to the north, west and south of St.Nicolas, offers a range of activities, from walking and cycling to water sports, a Velo-rail at Bussière-Galant and warm hospitality from the region's many family owned inns. It is a relatively undiscovered area, being known as part of the 'Hidden France' of Limousin.
